William Barret Travis, Texas commander at the battle of the Alamo, was the eldest of eleven children of Mark and Jemima (Stallworth) Travis. At the time of his birth the family lived on Mine Creek near the Red Bank community, which centered around the Red Bank Baptist Church in Edgefield District, near Saluda, Saluda County, South Carolina.
Travis was young at the age of 26, and was a lawyer and teacher in his younger days. He had already picked enough bones with the Mexican government that it would make a hungry dog slobber at the thought of so many.
He had married Lucinda Rosanna on October 28th, 1828 at the age of 19. He set up a law practice, but the business soon ended because of his fiery temper. he then moved his family to Texas, but soon his wife demanded a divorce.
He was a Luitentant Colonel in the battle of the Alamo, but constantly fought over command with Colonel Jim Bowie. But when Bowie fell sick with pnuemonia and gave full command to Travis.
During the first few minutes on the dawn of March 6, 1836, Travis was shot and killed by a bullet to the head.

Quotes
"I'm that same David Crockett, fresh from the backwoods, half-horse,
half-alligator, a little touched with the snapping turtle; can wade the
Mississippi, leap the Ohio, ride upon a streak of lightning, and slip without a
scratch down a honey locust [tree]."

Jim Bowie 1776-1836

James Bowie (1776-1836) was an American frontiersman, slave trader,
smuggler, Indian fighter and soldier in the Texas Revolution. He was among the defenders at
the Battle of the Alamo in 1836, where he perished
along with all of his comrades. Despite his somewhat checkered personal history,
Bowie is considered one of Texas' greatest heroes.
Early Life, Slave Trading and Land Speculation:
James Bowie was born in Kentucky on April 10, 1796: as a child he lived in
present-day Missouri and Louisiana. He enlisted to fight in the War of 1812, but joined too late to see any action. He was soon back in Louisiana, selling timber.
Many people believe that Jim Bowie invented the Bowie kife, but it was in fact his brother that invented it and gave it to Jim as a gift.
